Whereas Statistics Canada used to disseminate data on abortions performed on young women in Canada by the age-specific categories of “[u]nder 15 years”, “15 to 17 years”, and “18 to 19 years”, the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), which is presently responsible for dissemination data on abortions in Canada, limits the teenage category to one: women who were 17 years of age and younger at the time they had an abortion.
The total number of women aged 17 and younger who had a reported abortion in Canada during 2019 (the last year on record) is 1,722.
For women ages 18 – 24 there were 18,879 surgical abortions.
These figures are incomplete for Quebec, as well New Brunswick, Manitoba, and British Columbia clinics, due to the voluntary – and thus incomplete – nature of reporting by clinics.
